The scam has seen a number of students lose their money in a desperate rush to secure accommodation.
“We have received a number of complaints about a scam. People respond to adverts on notice boards and classifieds. The scammers pretend to own the buildings and ask people to deposit money into an account. On receiving the payment, a message is sent confirming payment,” said Constable Thabo Malatji of the Yeoville SAPS.
When they show up at the property, they find no trace of their payment or the person they dealt with. “We urge members of the community to be vigilant when seeking places of accommodation. Check the place out before any money is deposited,” warned Const Malatji.
