Something stinks in Greenstone

Hundreds of millions are spent and wasted in trying to fix this age old problem at this old recreational dam, which is an important water source for large areas of that northern countryside

Recent torrential rains have caused havoc with pipelines in Greenstone and Modderfontein.

This has left the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) with numerous problems, including storm water and silt entering the sewerage system, especially in Bushwillow Park.

This infrastructure problem has caused low lying areas of this estate to be covered with large tracts of flowing sewerage and has left residents and owners of the multi-million Rand dwellings frustrated.

In one case, tenants moved out, leaving a house next to one of the major spills empty, with losses to investors who own the property in this suburb.

This sewage is also entering nearby rivers and streams running through Modderfontein.

According to Mr Allan Bartram, a member of the Modderfontein Environmental Community Initiative (MECI), various CoJ departments toiled in difficult, wet conditions to repair faults.

“CoJ officials appear to be doing their best, but this on-going headache needs to be escalated to the powers that be to check for design faults and if indeed they do exist. They then need to rectify these problems which all have a bearing on the fresh water supply coming into and out of Hartebeespoort Dam, where pollution of the water has reached critical levels,” said Mr Bartram.

“Hundreds of millions are spent and wasted in trying to fix this age old problem at this old recreational dam, which is an important water source for large areas of that northern countryside,” he added.

The NEWS sent an enquiry to the City of Johannesburg regarding issues in Greenstone and Modderfontein.

An enquiry was sent on Monday, March 10 and comment was requested by March 13.

At the time of going to print, no comment was received.
