Identity of skull still unknown

At the time, people who were trying to locate missing family members went to the Cleveland SAPS to determine if the remains were that of their loved ones.

The identity of a skull and other remains is still a mystery after a human skull and lower limbs were found in Kensington on October 20 last year.

The remains were taken to a pathology lab.

At the time, people who were trying to locate missing family members went to the Cleveland SAPS to determine if the remains were that of their loved ones.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer said, “Blood was drawn from people for DNA comparison. Results from the lab revealed that there was no match. There is still one family that suspects the human remains belong to one of their relatives. More blood samples from different people will be sent to check one last time. The investigating officer is waiting for a report from the pathologist to confirm the age, race and gender of the deceased,” said Const Mashakane.

Mr Alfeus Gumbi, a security guard in Kensington, discovered the skull in a drain at the corner of Kitchener Avenue and Lancaster Street while patrolling the area.

He also saw other remains in the drain close to Lancaster Street and Cambridge Road.

Authorities, which included the Cleveland SAPS, Emergency Management Services, Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services and the dog unit rushed to the scene. The skull was removed from the drain and authorities tried to retrieve the other remains that were discovered. Rains at the time made it difficult to retrieve the other remains that were seen. Eventually remains, from the hips down, were removed from a drain.

No other remains were found.
