Writers 2000 held a short story writing workshop with publisher and author, Mr Dave Robbins facilitating the group on Saturday, March 29.

The group is open to all people who have an interest in writing. The group meets on the last Saturday afternoon of every month.

Mr Robbins has written articles on subjects ranging from culture and art, to major development issues confronting the developing world. His material has been published in leading South African newspapers, as well as journals in South Africa, Britain and America. He has also written three volumes of short stories.

“There is no strict definition of a short story, but it is generally under 7 500 words,” said Mr Robbins.

According to Mr Robbins, the key characteristic of a short story is the same as that of all fiction – it tells a story.

“There are some rules to observe and, as Sir Winston Churchill put it, it is advisable to know the rules before you break them,” he said.

According to the Writers 2000 marketing representative, Ms Nicolette Bosman, the workshop was highly informative and interactive. It was also thoroughly enjoyed by the

more than 30 participants who attended.
