River clean-up prevents crime

Residents have come together to clear out all the tress and bushes that have grown alongside the river so that area can be more visible.

As part of the Edenvale Riverwatch initiative on World Water Day, the Edenvale CPF, together with the Illiondale Wetland Buddies, cleaned up and removed plants along the river along Fourth Avenue and Sixth Street.

The removal of the plants took place on Saturday, March 29.

The overgrown trees, plants and weeds were removed with the goal of preventing crime in the area.

Mrs Lesley Thomas, from the Edenvale CPF and the Illiondale Wetland Buddies said, “Residents have come together to clear out all the tress and bushes that have grown alongside the river so that area can be more visible. This will help the SAPS and local security companies because the thick bushes have become a hiding place for criminals.”

“The SAPS has identified five problematic areas that criminals hide in. This is one of the areas and we hope to prevent crime with this clean up and removal of overgrown trees. To ensure the riverside is preserved, the residents have committed to maintaining the growth of plants and bushes to a minimum,” said Mrs Thomas.
