Nurses celebrated

"We recognise the skills shortage in the nursing profession, not only in our country but globally, and acknowledge that nurses are the heartbeat of the healthcare system."

Life Healthcare Group honoured the more than 9 516 nurses stationed at its hospitals country-wide in recognition of International Nurses Day on Monday, May 12.

The theme for this year’s International Nurses Day was, ‘A force for change, a vital resource for health’.

The theme recognises the important role nurses play in providing quality care, particularly in developing countries where access to health services is often limited. To meet these needs, a motivated and well-trained nursing force is essential.

Group Nursing Executive, Dr Sharon Vasuthevan said, “We recognise the skills shortage in the nursing profession, not only in our country but globally, and acknowledge that nurses are the heartbeat of the healthcare system.”

“To help address the shortage, Life Healthcare invests heavily in the training of aspiring nurses through its nationally accredited Life College of Learning. Since the inception of the college 16 years ago, over 11 000 nurses have been trained,” said Dr Vasuthevan.

CEO Mr AndrĂ© Meyer said, “Our entire business offering is dependent on the quality of our nursing. It is for this reason we also finance extensive refresher training courses for our experienced nurses.”

“International Nurses Day gives us the opportunity to thank each and every one of our nurses for their dedication. We especially congratulate our Top 100 nurses for 2014, each of whom was selected by their peers for their exceptional attitudes,” said Mr Meyer.
