Constable Mpho Mashakane, the Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said a woman heard people talking in the yard.
She found three men who were in possession of firearms.
They locked her in a toilet. A domestic worker heard the commotion and called a security company.
“Security guards reacted quickly and a shooting ensued between them and the suspects,” said Const Mashakane.
One suspect was shot dead, one injured and one apprehended. The injured suspect was taken to hospital.
