‘Hotel robbers’ nabbed
The arrest of two people last week in connection with a robbery that took place at a hotel in Bruma was described as a major breakthrough.
Last week the EXPRESS reported that yet another Angolan couple was followed from the OR Tambo Airport and robbed at a local hotel.
According to the SAPS, a couple booked into a hotel in Bruma on May 10 after arriving from the airport. While at the hotel, they were approached by three suspects.
The suspects pointed firearms at them and other guests. They demanded luggage and other personal belongings. One gunshot was fired on the roof of the hotel before the suspects fled the scene. They fled with luggage, iPhones, a laptop and US Dollars.
“The area was cordoned off and searched but the suspects managed to flee. On May 19, a man (38) was arrested at the airport. He was identified on security cameras and positively linked to the incident. He was the man seen on the Closed Circuit Television footage at the hotel. Police officers followed and arrested him,” said Const Mashakane.
Another arrest followed a day later. The man was linked to the robbery as well.
Detectives are trying to establish if these men are linked to other cases of a similar nature.
Earlier this year, the EXPRESS published an article in which a Cleveland SAPS police officer stated that several people who were followed from the airport and robbed at places of accommodation were Angolan citizens.
This included two dignitaries from the Angolan Parliament and their wives.
A man was also shot in a separate incident. He died shortly after the incident.
