Two on-duty Bedfordview SAPS officers arrested a man for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Friday, May 16.
The officers were patrolling the area when they noticed a man walking on the side of the road, drinking alcohol.
The officers warned the man that public drinking was a criminal offense. The man was unresponsive to the officers.
The officers then searched the man and discovered a firearm hidden on his waist. The officers asked the man to produce a license for the firearm. When the man could not provide a licence, one the officers arrested him.
The firearm was loaded with eight live rounds. The man was detained and is due to appear in the Germiston Court.
“This swift arrest shows the importance of police visibility in our community. We do not know how this situation could have ended, especially since the man was drinking alcohol. Who knows what could have happened if this arrest was not made. I commend the officers for their vigilance,” said the Bedfordview SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabati. @BedfordJourno
