Flaming record set to burn

The two now plan to better the record in the Free State town of Parys on September 5 this year, aiming for a distance of 120 metres.

Edenvale motorcycle ace, Quintin Claassen, will be involved with attempting to set a new world record.

He has built and prepared a motorcycle which will be used in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest motorcycle through a fire tunnel.

The record, generally regarded as one of the most dangerous, is currently held by South Africans Enrico Schoeman and Andre de Kock at a distance of 103 metres.

De Kock, the motorsport editor of The Citizen and Mr Schoeman, a photographer, set the record in Vaalwater, Limpopo, in August 2012, riding an Australian racing motorcycle and sidecar outfit.

The two now plan to better the record in the Free State town of Parys on September 5 this year, aiming for a distance of 120 metres.

The attempt will be the main show during the two-day Rhino Motorcycle Rally.

Claassen, who runs a specialist motorcycle tuning and building shop in Van Riebeeck Avenue, Edenvale, saw the Fire Tunnel Bike project as a special one.

“The Fire Tunnel Bike was received in pretty bad shape after the last record run,” he said.

During the last attempt, the engine suffered damage from burning diesel and debris, and most of the electronics had begun to melt.

β€œIt was a full-scale rescue mission,” said Claassen.

“We tune many motorcycles, but it is not often that people’s lives depend on the results. The two riders are totally insane, as far as I am concerned, but they have faith in our workmanship and have a sincere way of showing it,” he said.
