Yet another foetus was discovered in the Yeoville SAPS precinct.
A resident discovered the foetus at the corner of Kenmere and Page streets in Yeoville on Friday, May 23.
“The police received a complaint regarding a foetus dumped in a dustbin on the street corner. An investigation was launched and a woman in her early 20s was arrested in connection with the incident. It is alleged she underwent an illegal abortion and dumped the foetus, wrapped in a plastic bag, in the dustbin. She is facing charges of concealment of birth,” said Constable Thabo Malatji, of the Yeoville SAPS.
In February this year, the EXPRESS reported that a municipal worker discovered a plastic bag with a foetus inside it in Frances Street in Observatory.
Weeks later, a resident informed the police that a baby’s body was discovered at the corner of Hendon and Fortesque streets in Yeoville.
The still-born baby had been wrapped in a plastic bag and left on the pavement.
Last week, Constable Malatji said, “Concealment of birth is a crime and people must realise there are alternatives. Teenagers in particular must avoid engaging in unsafe sex as this leads to problems when they realise they cannot take care of an unplanned baby. They must look for alternatives when they find themselves in this situation. They can consult social workers or find organisations that are equipped to deal with these types of situations,” said Const Malatji.
He said the woman who was arrested in connection with the foetus found on May 23 is expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon.
