Winter Knights spread warmth
“We want to give back and to not always be on the receiving end,” he said.
Edenvale Round Table members camped outside The Brazen Head restaurant on Saturday, May 24, as part of the group’s Winter Knights initiative.
The idea was for members to gain first-hand experience of sleeping outside in the cold. This knowledge revealed to the members just how valuable one blanket can be on a cold night.
The group, which consists of business men, came together for a common cause, which was to better their community.
The Edenvale Round Table Chairman, Mr Kevin Kent, said he does not believe in giving street beggars money.
“If I give them money, I run out of cash and my donation keeps them on the street corner.”
He said it is better to teach a man how to fish, rather than to give a man a fish.
It is for this reason the club does not donate money, but will rather donate items which meet a specific need.
The Round Table Winter Knights initiative is a drive to collect as many old clothes and blankets as possible. This is to help the homeless and needy keep warm this winter.
Residents contributed various items in support of this initiative.
The Brazen Head owner, Mr Dyllon McGregor, donated R1 000 and kept a box in the restaurant, where patrons could support the event.
McGregor said it is good to give back to the community.
“We want to give back and to not always be on the receiving end,” he said.
