Art exhibition held for Child Protection Week
The Johannesburg Children’s Home (JCH) celebrated Child Protection Week with an art exhibition on Saturday, May 31, at the Westcott Hall in Urania Street, Observatory.
The art exhibition featured the sale of artworks and a car wash. The proceedings from the sales were aimed at benefiting the children’s art therapy classes.
According to Ms Fiona Duke, the public relations officer of the Johannesburg Children’s Home, “Art classes are one of the therapies offered to children to enable them to explore their feelings and creative talent.”
This year’s Child Protection Week theme was Caring for the Community. Ms Duke agreed that this theme was reflected at the JCH.
“For over a century, the home has provided care for children who have fallen victim to various categories of abuse, which include sexual, emotional, physical and deliberate neglect. It is never ideal for children to grow up in a children’s home but it is better than the alternative,” said Ms Duke.
“Abandonment, neglect and abuse are the inevitable reasons for many young children being placed in our care. With support from the community, the home is able to continue to take care of children in need,” said Ms Duke.
“Regardless of their past, each of the children has the chance of a better today and a brighter tomorrow, because of the help they receive from these sorts of days,” said Ms Duke. @JoziReporter
