Groenewald off to Commonwealth Games
Craig Groenewald, a Linksfield resident, will soon be jetting off to Glasgow.
He was selected to represent South Africa in the 2014 Commonwealth Games to be held in July.
Groenewald has held as many as seven world records at one time and has broken 18 world records in his career.
He is highly ranked in the 400 metre, 200 metre, 100 metre and 50 metre freestyle, 100 metre and 50 metre butterfly and 200 metre individual medley.
He was awarded the Best Male Swimmer of the World Championships in 2005 in the Czech Republic and Best Male Athlete of the Global Games in 2009. He holds 12 South African records.
Groenewald attended two Paralympic Games and medaled at these events.
Groenewald is trained by Theo Verster, an Olympian. Verster said, “I have always admired Groenewald’s courage and great swimming ability. He has been an inspiration to me. He is a legend.”
Swimming is Groenewald’s passion. He hopes to continue swimming for as long as he is competitive.
He would also like to be more involved in open water swimming. He won the Midmar Mile 16 times.
Groenewald loves being outdoors, especially at swimming events in the sea. He says that the challenges are different to that of swimming in a pool.
