Be a friend of Rhodes Park
To run this initiative successfully, they need a minimum of 20 regular volunteers.
Rhodes Park sees thousands of people visit every year but is in need of a few real friends.
The I Love Kensington Association (Ilka) is trying to revive the Friends of Rhodes Park initiative.
The Friends of Rhodes Park committee was active a few years ago and two of the original volunteers, Ms Karen Stillwell and Mr Mike van Koningsbruggen, are keen to revive it.
The purpose of this initiative is to welcome and encourage people to use the park and to educate visitors about the relevant bylaws pertaining to the use of open areas.
To run this initiative successfully, they need a minimum of 20 regular volunteers. Participants would be required to do a two to three hour shift on a Saturday, Sunday or on a public holiday.
Each person will be committed to a shift about once a month.
Volunteers, wearing security bibs, will be expected to walk the park in pairs and meet-and-greet visitors.
They will carry refuse bags to pick up litter and provide sweets to children. They will also hand out welcome cards with information about Ilka and Kensington, along with safety tips with contact numbers for security.
The anticipated launch of this project is August 2.
Interested people can contact Mr Van Koningsbruggen at khanyisanihbc@outlook.com or Mrs Lornette Joseph, the Ilka chairperson, at chair@kensington.org.za
