If you work or live in Kensington, you are urged to join the I Love Kensington Association (Ilka).
By joining the association, you can make a difference, one that can benefit you in the long run.
Ilka’s objectives are to promote the rights, interests and the general welfare of residents, to act as a combined voice of all residents to the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), to promote safety and security, maintain and protect the residential character of the area and to ensure the land rights are properly adhered to.
This association is made up of 14 volunteer, executive committee members.
They manage portfolios such as that those concerning bylaws, safety and security, heritage, animal welfare, events, infrastructure and the Kensington Area Project.
The association has built a good working relationship between the Jeppe and Cleveland SAPS, the community and Ilka. Meetings are held monthly between the SAPS and the community. Here, safety and security are discussed.
The Ilka Facebook page has an active following, which allows residents to interact and share advice. Much community information is disseminated through this medium.
The newly updated Ilka webpage carries news, articles, notices and information useful to residents.
Due to active citizenship, more street and park clean-ups are carried out by community members.
The infrastructure sub-committee has had increased successes in obtaining council assistance in attending to faulty street lights, potholes, water leaks and some by-law infringements.
“There are financial and psychological benefits to uplifting our suburb. As a homeowner, your house is probably your biggest asset and in uplifting the suburb, we will raise the value of all our properties. For a business, a safe, positive and vibrant environment draws customers. The excellent schools in our suburb continue to draw young families to the area. We all have a vested interest in maintaining high standards.
“Our goal is to have everyone feeling safer and more connected with their neighbours and the larger Kensington community. We hope, through the years, to increase the sense of pride and belonging for everyone associated with one of Johannesburg’s oldest and largest suburbs,” said Ms Sue Muller, from the association.
Ilka committee meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at 6.30pm in winter and 7pm in summer at the Kensington Bowling Club in Ivanhoe Street.
