Reunion at Leicester Road School

Leicester Road Primary School, in Kensington, went back in time all the way to years before the 80’s recently.

About 140 former pupils who attended the school before the 1980’s were at a reunion luncheon held on June 21.

The organising committee included Mr Mike Ellison, Mr Keith Ravenscroft, Mr Gerald van Staden, Ms Genie Wright, Ms Ingrid De Munik, Ms Fiona Garcia and Linda Magennis.

They were amazed at the range of people who attended the event. There were at least 10 people in their 80’s, some of whom were among the first group of pupils under the founding principal, Mr Frank Braun.

Some notable attendees were Mr Harold Ward (86), an ex-teacher at Leicester Road Primary School, Ms Jean Warburton who was a teacher at the school for 40 years, Ms Wright who is Mr Braun’s daughter and an ex-teacher at the school and Ms Rosalind Sandburg and Ms Vivian Cowley, who were in the first group of pupils in 1938.

During the event, the master of ceremonies Mr Ravenscoft, introduced the current principal, Mrs Renee Abrahams, who delivered a speech about the school.

The keynote speaker was ex-Leicester Road pupil, Professor Graham Hall. He spoke of his years at the school, as well as about the “excellent standard of education at the school over many years”.

Prof Hall, who is also an educator, mentioned how fortunate all those present were to have grown up in Kensington and to have attended “such a prestigious school, which for 75 years has been ranked in the top five primary schools in Gauteng”.
