Balaclava man to appear in court soon

The “balaclava man” will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on July 29.

The man, arrested in May, was wanted for about two months for breaking into properties and terrorising people in several suburbs including Belgravia, Jeppestown and Troyeville.

Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, the Jeppe SAPS communications officer, said the man and his accomplices, wearing balaclavas, would break into houses while the occupants were sleeping. They would ransack the house and take items such as cellular phones, watches, wallets, money, bank and shopping cards.

W/O Munyai said that during their robbery sprees, they would also rape female victims and in one of the properties, shot and killed a man.

When the “balaclava man” was arrested on May 3, he was found in possession of watches, wallets and a number of other items which included a firearm.

He appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on May 5 facing charges of house robbery, rape, murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The case was postponed on two occasions.

When he appeared on May 28, residents went to the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court to protest against him being granted bail.

W/O Munyai said the bail application was postponed. The man’s legal representative did not arrive at the court according to W/O Munyai.
