St John’s pupil named world champion

Jason Batzofin, a St John’s pupil and Observatory resident, recently earned his spurs and Protea colours for the Ancients wargame.

This St John’s College pupil finished first in the junior male category, earning him the title of junior world champion.

He obtained these accolades at the 2014 World Championships held on June 29 and 30 in Maseru, Lesotho.

Wargames are better known to many as Tactical Exercise Without Troops (Tewt), which have been used to train officers, improve logic and improve problem solving for centuries.

The first set of rules was produced for the King of Prussia in 1820. After the success enjoyed by the Prussians, the rules were adopted by the British Army in 1879.

Today the game is played by several civilians. Jason is upbeat about his success and is determined to defend his title in future years.
