Dead owl may have been poisoned

It is believed the owl died after it ate a poisoned rat.

Ms Michelle Nel from neighbouring Cyrildene has raised concerns about the poisoning of owls.

She shared a photograph, taken by Ms Sue Blumberg, of a dead young Spotted Eagle Owl with the NEWS’ sister publication EXPRESS.

According to Ms Nel the young bird was catching rats in the area.

She believes the owl may have eaten a poisoned rat which resulted in its death.

“Please only use Bayer’s Racumin and hide the poison away from pets and children. Owls are our best friends in keeping rat populations down. A pair of owls can demolish over 1 000 rats a year. Please conserve our owls,” she said.
