Tremor hits Gauteng

On December 2 last year, a similar tremor hit Johannesburg which lasted approximately 10 seconds.

The US Geological Survey has released an intensity map of this afternoon’s tremor.

The epicenter of the seismic activity was approximately 6 kilometers from Orkney at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

The tremor lasting roughly 40 to 50 seconds hit Gauteng this afternoon at around 12.20.

The NEWS has received reports from as far afield as Welkom, Rustenburg, Pretoria, parts of Mpumalanga and Polokwane, where the tremor was felt.

On December 2 last year, a similar tremor hit Johannesburg which lasted approximately 10 seconds.

Twitter users from around Gauteng reported that their walls and floors were literally shaking.

Initial estimates are that the tremor measured 5.3 on the Richter scale.
