Spelling Bee competition for youngsters

Can your child spell? Can your child buzz their way to victory?

If your answer is yes, then the Joburg East Express Spelling Bee competition is the one for you.

The competition is inspired by the world-wide phenomenon where school children compete among themselves, spelling a broad selection of words in pursuit of being crowned the king and queen of spelling.

The Joburg East Express Spelling Bee competition, powered by Hirsch’s, is one of the first events to be held under the auspices of Caxton in order to promote literacy.

The event is developed to afford our future leaders with an opportunity to grow their public speaking skills, while improving their speech and promoting the unerring usage of the English language, pronunciation and spelling.

The competition will take place on September 3, 2014, at Eastgate Primary School and is open to all grade 7 pupils from schools in the Joburg East Express distribution areas such as Malvern, Kensington, Fairview, Bezuidenhout Valley, Bruma, Dewetshof, Observatory and Cyriledene.

The aim of the competition is to expand children’s horizons beyond the classroom and enhance their process of learning. The participating schools are Jeppe Preparatory School, Troyeville Primary, Eastgate Primary and Kensington Ridge Primary School so far.

To get your school involved, contact Mr Christopher Mcinga before August 22 to receive a list of preparation words for the competition.

Judges for the competition will be Ms Elaine Macdonald, an author, scriptwriter and children’s television presenter. Ms Macdonald was also involved in writing the children’s edutainment program, Kideo (winner of the 1993 Japan International Prize). She has a unique style of writing based on her academic and entertainment training.

Joining Ms Macdonald on the judging is Ms Ntsiki Mkhize, a former Miss South Africa Teen finalist in 2007 and one of the founders of an entrepreneurial ventures brand, called CREAM (Creating Revolutionary Entrepreneurs And Moguls).

The first prize for the competition is a Kindle and a R1 000 voucher sponsored by Hirsch’s. The second prize is a R500 Hirsch’s voucher and the third prize is a R250 voucher sponsored by the Joburg East Express.
