A golden anniversary with a rich history

“Reaching our golden wedding anniversary is a milestone that has been based on having love, understanding and forgiveness for each other,”

Mr Collen and Mrs Jean Hawley from St Andrews recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Mr and Mrs Hawley were married on August 1, 1964, in Primrose.

“We celebrated this milestone by holding a function in Bedfordview. We then went on a cruise to the Mediterranean. We enjoyed our anniversary day in Venice,” said Mr Hawley.

“Reaching our golden wedding anniversary is a milestone that has been based on having love, understanding and forgiveness for each other,” said Mrs Hawley.

Mr Hawley believes an important factor of marriage is building on things together and also having common interests.

“There should be things you both share and care for in a marriage. The goals and principles you have in life must be common,” said Mr Hawley.

“Another important factor for a marriage is health. To have reached this milestone we have been blessed with health and having our children,” said Mr Hawley.

Mr and Mrs Hawley have two children, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The Hawley family has been pioneers of Edenvale and is part of the early Edenvale history.

“My father, a Hawley, was one of the founders and pioneers of Edenvale. One of my uncles was part of the United Building Society as an agent and had a lot to do with the establishment of Hurlyvale and Glendower.”

“My father had a tombstone business and used to employ engineers before the depression. He also did a lot of work in the establishment of Modderfontein. There is also a Hawley Road in Bedfordview and a Freemantle Road in Edenvale. These roads are named after my father’s uncle,” said Mr Hawley. @BedfordJourno
