Dolphins excel at short course champs

The Mandeville Dolphins scooped several medals at the SA Short Course Aquatics Championships held at the JC Joliffe Pool in Pietermaritzburg earlier this month.

Only two swimmers from the disabled squad, coached by Olympian Tadhg Slattery, participated in the multi-disability events, but snagged 18 medals between them.

Thulane Mabuza (15) won five gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Moses Malatji (22) won two gold, five silver and two bronze medals.

They swam personal best times in all their events.

Michael Meyer had a spectacular meet, winning gold in the 200 metre individual medley and qualifying for the World Short Course Championships in this event later this year.

He also won silver in the 400 metre individual medley and qualified for worlds in this event as well.

Michael won bronze in the 200 metre butterfly and 400 metre freestyle. Chad le Clos took gold and Sebastian Rousseau took silver in the 200 metre butterfly.

Kelly Gunnell won bronze in the 200 metre breaststroke.

Stephanus Coetzer had a fantastic championship, winning gold in the 200 metre backstroke and gold in the 100 metre backstroke.

He qualified for worlds in the 100 metre backstroke.

Nathania van Niekerk (15) gave notice to the big guns in securing a bronze medal in the women’s 400 metre freestyle event after Karin Prinsloo and Caitlin Kat. Nathania is currently in Nanjing, China, where she’s competing at the Youth Olympic Games.
