“Meter readers” rob resident
When the men encountered one of the complex’s residents, they overpowered him and forced him into his house.
Concerns have been raised after an increase in criminal activity regarding fake meter readers.
Last week, another unsuspecting resident, this time in Illiondale, fell victim to fake meter readers.
“Several men arrived at a complex in Illiondale, pretending they were there to read the water meters,” said the acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts.
When the men encountered one of the complex’s residents, they overpowered him and forced him into his house.
“The men tied the resident up and fled with electronic goods,’ said Lt Col Roberts.
Ward 18 councillor for Edenvale, Clr Heather Hart, expressed concern at the increase of such crimes.
“This is the second incident in as many weeks in Edenvale,” she said.
She reminded all residents that meter readers operate alone and usually have some form of identification with them which should be clearly visible.
“Meter readers normally visit at the same time each month, depending upon which cycle your account is on, therefore either mid-month or end of the month,” said Clr Hart.
She urged anyone who may suspect they have encountered fake meter readers to immediately contact their SAPS sector vehicles for assistance.
