224 brand new books dumped
224 sealed and unused books were dumped on Junction Road recently.

“It makes me sick and angry that someone would throw away so many books and disregard the children who would need them for education.”
These were the words from a furious resident who found 224 sealed and unused books that were dumped on Junction Road recently.
Bedfordview resident Ms Cathy Harberland and her husband found various brand new language books, Zulu books, workbooks and study books for grade three and four pupils which could be used for children’s basic education. The books were dumped and to be collected by the municipality’s garbage collectors.
“My husband and I found the books dumped on Junction Road near the Bedfordview Germiston SPCA. I remember opening the books and being in shock that they were unused and still wrapped in plastic,” said Ms Harberland.
“We collected all the books and took them home with us. My housekeeper and I counted the books and placed them in their various categories,” said Ms Harberland.
The 224 books were donated to the Orlando Children’s Home in Soweto, where they are currently being utilised by the children at the home.
“Dumping books is wrong and unacceptable. We live in a country that is already facing a shortage for resources to educate children. These dumped books were going to be sent through a grinder while there are children in this country who lack access to them. Whoever dumped them should be ashamed,” said Ms Harberland.
“Children are the blood of the country and its future. It is important we uphold their education and resources,” said Ms Harberland.
