According to the head of detectives for the Edenvale SAPS, Colonel Ben Baloyi, the man was using a fraudulent identity document to open various accounts under his victim’s name.

Some of the accounts opened include Edgars, Ackermans and Bradlows.

“We believe the man is working as part of a syndicate operating at numerous shopping centres including Greenstone Shopping Centre, Eastgate Shopping Centre, Lakeside Mall and Festival Mall,” said Col Baloyi.

He added that a second man was arrested at Greenstone Shopping Centre yesterday also for fraudulently opening accounts.

“Both men are Zimbabwean nationals and both are living in South Africa without the relevant documentation,” said Col Baloyi.
