Edenvale’s Philatelic Society hosts exhibition

An Edenvale stamp collectors exhibition was held at the Greenstone Shopping Centre on October 11.

The organiser, Mr Keith Baillie, said he was first introduced to stamp collecting by his father, who gave him an album with stamps at a young age.

He soon lost interest, but as he grew older he started collecting stamps again.

The Edenvale Philatelic Society meets every first Wednesday of the month at the Edenvale Community Centre.

The society caters for a wide spectrum of collectors, from beginners to serious philatelists.

Mr Baillie gave the following tips to aspiring stamp collectors: Trim the paper close to the stamps, fill a shallow bowl with lukewarm water and add a pinch of salt. Let the stamps soak for 10 to 20 minutes, or until they separate from the paper. Rinse the stamps in fresh water, place the stamps on blotting paper, or roller towel with the picture side down, and leave until dry.

Stamps may curl when dry, but you can straighten them out by placing them in a thick book for a few days. Once the stamps have straightened out, you can then place them in your collection. Remember to use tweezers at all times when handling stamps.
