EMM to confront water shortage challenges
He also reported to council that the municipality is in the process of constructing two new water reservoirs in Palm Ridge and Etwatwa, which should be completed in 2015.
In response to the water shortages that hit the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) recently, the municipality is working on a future water management plan to mitigate water shortage threats.
The executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, made the announcement during council’s last sitting for the year on November 27.
“The technical glitches presented an opportunity for the EMM to ponder the systems and plans to deal with such outages in the future. Paramount to the plan is the consideration of an early warning system which would be used to indicate dropping water levels and allow for speedy interventions. This will be achieved through reservoirs and making it easier to divert from one reservoir to another, as and when such a need arose,” said Clr Gungubele.
He also reported to council that the municipality is in the process of constructing two new water reservoirs in Palm Ridge and Etwatwa, which should be completed in 2015.
According to Clr Gungubele, more reservoirs are on the cards.
“We will be constructing 20 new reservoirs in Benoni, Brakpan, Nigel, Kempton Park and Voslorus,” said the mayor.
In addition, Clr Gungubele said the EMM is establishing a Rapid Response Unit to ensure a speedy response to water leakages across the EMM.
