Speaker box explodes in youngster’s face

Miss Nkumane said she was concerned that the accident may impact upon her son's studies.

A 17-year-old Eastleigh teenager is fighting for his life at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital after a speaker box blew up in his face in the early hours of Friday morning.

Ms Sonto Nkumane, said her son placed the speaker box near his face as he wanted to listen to music as he slept.

“Just after 12am, my son Nhlanhla Fakude came into my room shaking and in a terrible state. He told me the speaker box blew up. We had to rush him to hospital. The doctors’ preliminary results suggested he would need surgery to both eyes. I am not sure of the other injuries as the doctors said they will give us more information at a later stage,” said Ms Nkumane.

The device was purchased in Rustenburg in September.

Miss Nkumane said she was concerned that the accident may impact upon her son’s studies.

“He is supposed to start college next week. But if he is not discharged, this incident may have a greater impact upon him than it already has,” said Miss Nkumane.
