10 year sentence for illegal firearm, ammunition

The Johannesburg Regional court sentenced Mr Sibonelo Ntuli (24) to 10 years in prison for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Warrant Officer Richard Munyai said Ntuli was arrested on November 1, 2013, in Jeppestown.

W/O Munyai said police officers were patrolling when they came across Ntuli at about 4pm and decided to search him.

On searching him, the officers found a firearm with four live rounds.

According to W/O Munyai, the firearm’s serial numbers were filed off.

Ntuli was subsequently arrested and investigations uncovered that the firearm had been stolen from a security company.

Ntuli faced two charges, one charge for possessing an unlicensed firearm and one charge for being in possession of ammunition.

He received a seven year sentence for the firearm charge and a three year sentence for the ammunition charge.

Both sentences will run concurrently.
