National library week aims to connect residents
Every year, during March, librarians across the country host special programmes to highlight the services and resources of libraries.

Librarians use the opportunity to invite all community members to visit their nearest library and to take the time to ask about the special services on offer at libraries.
South African Library Week will run from March 14 to 21 this year.
The theme this year is Connect @ your library and reiterates the belief that libraries connect people to each other, to knowledge and information. Libraries also grant access to print and electronic resources, technology and professional support.
Johannesburg libraries offer popular programmes for people of all ages.
“The library week is used to promote our Ready to Read Programme, which involves more than 160 crèches, our Story Skirmish and Battle of the Books which involves more than 400 schools, the Science Scuffle which involves more than 180 schools, as well as the services to old age homes and Correctional Services. Library week is also used as a fine-free period, which allows residents to return overdue books without having to pay a fine,” said Ms Maryna Moolman.
With a network of 87 libraries in the City of Johannesburg, library staff strive to lead the way in being active community partners who develop an informed and educated nation.
“Over and above information resources, libraries provide a safe space for children to enjoy themselves with books. It is also a space for pupils to do their homework. A friendly librarian is always available to help and channel energy. This is what library week is all about – learn about your library,” said Ms Moolman.
Residents are encouraged to visit their libraries during this period and participate in special library week activities.
