Possible chemical spill causes concerns

Mrs Lesley Thomas from the Illiondale Wetland Buddies told the NEWS that there have been previous spillages in the area.

Residents raised concerns over a possible chemical spill last week, along Ingwe Road in Sebenza.

Following rains on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, a white foam has washed over Ingwe Road and into the stream which feeds the Illiondale Wetlands.

“We are not sure where it is coming from or what it is,” said Ms Doris Jemmell, an employee of a business along Ingwe Road.

Mrs Lesley Thomas from the Illiondale Wetland Buddies told the NEWS that there have been previous spillages in the area.

“Sometimes the foam is pink, sometimes it is green and sometimes it is white,” she said.

Mrs Thomas added that the Illiondale Wetland Buddies work closely with the Department of Environmental Affairs.

“We have seen this before and have also seen this happen on a much larger scale. The culprit is hard to trace but we do suspect a business but have yet been unable to obtain proof,” she said.

Further investigations will be conducted.

On Thursday the NEWS sent an enquiry to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) with regards to the spillage.

Comment was requested by Friday morning.

At the time of going to print no comment was received.
