The new Yeoville Police Station will benefit both the community and the police officers.
This was said by the station’s communications officer, Constable Thabo Malatji.
The station was moved to its new premises at 53-55 Baker Street in Yeoville in January.
“We now have things we did not have before. We have all our members in one location. Previously, the detective and the uniform units were housed in separate areas. This hampered our workflow as the units could not easily discuss information about cases. Now they can. The detectives were previously based at two different premises. This is now a thing of the past. We are all under one roof,” he said.
He said the new facility has started to show positive effects on the SAPS members and the communities.
“You can see a difference in the Client Service Centre (CSC). The environment has improved the mood of officers and the people visiting our station. The atmosphere just calms everyone. Officers have almost everything they need to render services to the community. The service delivery has improved significantly,” he said.
Const Malatji said the new premises also boasts sufficient parking.
“We have access controlled outside parking and basement parking for the community. We are trying to eliminate the usage of the parking by people who are not coming to get services from the station. We also want to avoid overnight parking at the station. But already the parking situation has improved,” he said.
He added that the new station has holding cells and a cluster office for the Hillbrow SAPS cluster commander and her team.
He urged the community to protect and keep the new property clean.
“Use the dustbins that are strategically placed around the station. We can now say to the community that we have a bigger and better facility, so let us work together to maintain it,” he said.
Const Malatji said the old premises were handed back to the City of Johannesburg.
