SAPS confirms attacks in Johannesburg

Hillbrow SAPS Cluster communications officer, Constable Thabo Malatji,Thabo Malatji, confirmed yesterday's reports that groups of people targeted shops owned by foreigners.

“They broke into shops to loot goods,” said Const Malatji.

“The police tried to monitor the situation but it was hectic as looters were assaulting foreign nationals,” he said.

Two people were injured when they were assaulted by the group.

“In other incidents some people were attacking vehicles passing Jeppes hostel,” said Const Maltaji.

The ANC’s national executive committee member, Jessie Duarte, last night expressed concern over xenophobic violence spreading to Johannesburg.
