Vacant land finally gets cleared

The contractor, Mr Mike Olifant, said the brief received from the department included the cutting of the grass, as well as replacing the missing bars on the fence.

Residents living in the proximity of the government-owned land on Kirkby Road say they can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

This comes after the Gauteng Department of Education appointed a contractor to cut the grass and fix the palisade fence, allegedly broken by vagrants to gain access to the area.

The contractor, Mr Mike Olifant, said the brief received from the department included the cutting of the grass, as well as replacing the missing bars on the fence.

He said he managed to get most of the vagrants living on the land to move out.

“We only have one left so far and we are struggling to get him out,” said Mr Olifant.

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, said she would get members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) to remove him and monitor the area.

A resident living in a nearby complex said she was happy the government was doing something about the safety of the residents.
