The ward 66 councillor, Clr Carlos da Rocha, called on residents to accept foreign nationals back into the community.
The ward 118 councillor, Clr Mike Spadino, thanked the SAPS and all those who helped during the xenophobic attacks in his ward.
He said that since the beginning of the unrest, he was inundated with calls from frightened local residents and foreign nationals.
“If it was not for the excellent police involvement, these acts of looting and violence against foreign nationals could have been worse,” he said.
Clr Spadino said residents also came on board to help the displaced foreign nationals who were housed at the Cleveland Police Station.
“Some residents were giving the displaced people soup and bread at the police station,” he said.
The ward 66 councillor, Clr Carlos da Rocha, called on residents to accept foreign nationals back into the community.
“I ask my fellow South Africans to not tarnish our reputation to the world. Let us love our neighbours and let us stop xenophobia. We can resolve whatever problems we have peacefully. Let us be one, united and proud African nation,” he said.
He also thanked the SAPS for its role during the situation.
“Let us thank our police officers who are out there putting their lives in danger to help us maintain our unity. Let us not forget what our new flag represents. Thank you to the SAPS for doing what you can to keep the peace. Thank you my fellow South Africans who chose to not harm fellow human beings,” said Clr Da Rocha said.
