Ilka aggravated by rezoning applications

The I Love Kensington Association (Ilka) calls on residents to voice their objections on rezoning applications in the area.

The I Love Kensington Association (Ilka) calls on residents to voice their objections on rezoning applications in the area.

The Ilka chairperson, Mr Tony de Munnik, said proper procedures were not followed in three rezoning applications.

These applications were for residential zoning to business.

“This is a major issue at present, as various entities appear keen to take advantage of a quiet property market to buy properties on behalf of businesses, and then commence business activities without following due process,” said Mr De Munnik.

He said the developments in the area will negatively affect the heritage of the suburb.

He told the EXPRESS the rezoning applications are for a massage parlour on Northumberland Road, a business premises on Langermann Drive and another business premises on Queen Street.

“This is an appeal to rate payers to be aware of these types of activities. Realise that you have a right to object if you feel that such an application will be detrimental to the suburb and possibly impact on your property values going forward. We don’t have due processes being followed and our objections being heard,” he said.

The ward 118 ward councillor, Clr Mike Spadino, called on the community to voice its views on the matter.

“Do what is best for the suburb. Do not sit and complain later. Use the chance you have now to comment,” said Clr Spadino.

The EXPRESS forwarded an inquiry regarding the concerns raised by Ilka to Mr Thabo Rangwana, from the City of Johannesburg Development Planing and Urban Management Department. An inquiry was also sent to Mr Anda Mbikwane, from the Infrastructure Service and Environmental Department and Mr Bongani Nhleko, from the Public Safety Department.

The inquiry was sent on April 14 and the EXPRESS requested a response to Ilka’s concerns by April 16 at 9am. At the time of going to print, no comment was received.

Mr De Munnik said residents can forward their comments on these applications to chair@kensington.co.za
