UPDATE: #EastgateBombScare hoax investigated

Police are following all possible leads at this stage.

Following last night’s #EastgateBombScare at Bedfordview’s Eastgate Shopping Centre, the Bedfordview SAPS has confirmed that a docket has been opened and a case of bomb scare hoax is being investigated.

“Details of the investigation cannot be made public, but the police are following all possible leads at this stage,” said spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS, around 4pm yesterday, centre management received an email claiming that there were bombs placed in all the centre’s entry points which would explode within two hours.

Shoppers and tenants were evacuated as a precaution.

Some hours after the bomb squad and K-9 units had entered the centre, they declared the area safe as no explosives were found.

As of this morning, it is business as usual at the centre.
