Edenvale resident and former Holy Rosary pupil, Nikita Lagler, has made it to the semi-finals in the Miss Earth South Africa pageant.
Miss Earth South Africa is a leadership programme that aims to empower young South African women with the knowledge and platform to create a sustainable difference in the plight to combat the destruction of South Africa’s natural heritage.
After not being accepted to study Dance at the University of Tshwane (TUT), the 22-year-old decided to enrol at the University of South Africa, where she graduated with a BA in Communication Science.
As part of the Miss Earth programme, Nikita recently visited Ithembelihle School in Primrose, Germiston, where she helped pupils plant trees. She expressed how important it is to educate young people about the environment.
Nikita said the visit to the school was an eye-opener for her because the children taking part in the planting were enthusiastic and eager to learn.
“I think if we started teaching children from a young age about environmental issues, itwould make a big difference in the fight against global warming,” said Nikita.
“If we want to alleviate poverty and hunger, we need to start teaching children how important it is to take care of the environment and that the Earth will take care of you if you take care of it,” she said.
Nikita said the reason she decided to enter the Miss Earth SA pageant is because she wanted to be a part of something different, to be part of a movement for change.
“I want to continue learning about the environment so that I can impart the information to children to get to that stage as well.
