Wim Verhoogt fondly remembered as a community minded man

“My dad was a family man and always set out to make a difference in everyone's lives that he came in contact with,” said Mark.

Mr Mark Verhoogt spoke to the NEWS this morning following the death of his father, well-known Edenvale baker, Mr Wim Verhoogt.

He said his father was a community man who aimed to restore Edenvale to its former glory.

Mr Wim Verhoogt established De Backery in 1963 and expanded the Dutch inspired complex since. “My dad was a family man and always set out to make a difference in everyone’s lives that he came in contact with,” said Mark.

He added that he was proud to be Wim’s son and will strive to continue in his dads footsteps.

De Backery and the windmill will be closed on June 11 to allow the Verhoogt family to attend the funeral of Mr Wim Verhoogt.

The community is welcome to visit the bakery to obtain information on the funeral.

The family have also set out a book at De Backery in which residents can write messages of support for those who knew Mr Verhoogt.
