Makwakwa delivers budget speech

In addition to the increase in tariff rates, Clr Makwakwa announced that the rest of the budget will be allocated in the following ways:

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s (EMM) MMC for Finance, Clr Moses Makwakwa, delivered the 2015/2016 budget speech recently.

In addition to the increase in tariff rates, Clr Makwakwa announced that the rest of the budget will be allocated in the following ways:

  •  Social support packages: R2.5-billion.
  •  Capital investment programme: R14.6-billion of which 40 percent will be used to upgrade and renew infrastructure, 30 percent for landscaping in the metro and 30 percent to economic development.
  •  Transport: R825-million, of which R568-million will be used for the Integrated Rapid Pubic Transport Network, R93-million for the construction of four new taxi ranks (one of which will be in Palm Ridge) and R40-million for metro buses to cover new routes in the east of the metro.
  •  Roads and storm water: R1.2-billion.
  •  Energy: R1.4-billion.
  •  Water and sanitation: R1.1-billion, of which 47 percent will be used for new infrastructure and 53 percent for maintenance and repairs.
  •  Human settlement: R579-million.
  •  Community safety: R128-million, with an additional R100-million budgeted for the EMPD infrastructure programme.
  •  Sports, recreation, arts and culture: R193-million.
  •  Health and social development: R104-million.
  •  Environmental resources management and waste management: R267-million.
  •  Economic development: R67-million with a further R82-million towards the promotion and facilitation of economic growth.
  •  Bursaries and skills development programmes: R26-million.
  •  Information and communication technology: R89-million.
