NMS raise awareness at the 2015 Zombie Run

To raise awareness of the organisation, 12 volunteers from No More Suffering (NMS), a non-profit animal rights organisation, joined the Zombie Run at GeekFest 2015 held on July 4.

Volunteers from No More Suffering (NMS), a non-profit animal rights organisation, joined GeekFest’s 2015 Zombie Run to raise awareness of the organisation and animal rights.

The Zombie Run took place at Huddle Park in Linksfield on July 4.

The Johannesburg based organisation’s aim was to raise awareness about the daily hardships animals endure in South Africa and across the globe. The GeekFest 2015 and the Zombie Run was seen as an appropriate vehicle to raise animal rights awareness because it represented a mock apocalypse. Ms Tricia Davis, NMS director said the rhino and other animal species are becoming extinct at an alarming rate.

“No More Suffering believes that unless decisive action is taken, non-human animal species are heading towards an apocalypse,” said Ms Davis. “We saw the event as a fun way in which to raise awareness of the devastation being wreaked on this planet.”

Prior to the start of the Zombie Run, 12 NMS volunteers raised awareness by wearing branded t-shirts, handing out flyers and speaking to interested parties about the organisation and animal rights causes.

The volunteers advised festival goers on how to take action in their own lives by being more compassionate towards animals and by choosing cruelty-free products.

The Zombie Apocalypse began at 3pm when the zombies were let into the compound, where they hid and waited to prey on the humans who entered the compound after them. The humans had to attempt to reach the finish line without losing their lives, represented by red flags, to the zombies.

“We feel that the Zombie Run draws a stark parallel to what is happening to animals through poaching, canned hunting and trapping, to name but a few,” said Ms Davis. “Everyone had fun and awareness and interest was raised. We are pleased to report that our human team survived the apocalypse, while our zombie team managed to take several human lives.”

Proceeds from the Zombie Run will go towards the FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Johannesburg North.
