Retirement home residents get spoilt

The home supervisor at the Kensington Garden Retirement Village, Ms Elaine Halton, said she hosted a soup kitchen for 67 minutes to commemorate Madiba's legacy.

Residents of the De Wetshof Retirement Village in Kensington were spoilt on Mandela Day.

The home supervisor at the Kensington Garden Retirement Village, Ms Elaine Halton, said she hosted a soup kitchen for 67 minutes to commemorate Madiba’s legacy.

“My family and I decided to hold the soup kitchen here at De Wetshof,” said Ms Halton.

“My family agreed to help because elderly residents are close to our hearts,” she said.

“My mom just asked us to assist and we we all jumped in to help. This is our way of showing the community that we should all stand together and uplift one another,” said Ms Ann Hawley.

One of the residents, Ms Vera Swanepoel, said they enjoy the soup which is donated by different organisations on a weekly basis.

“A special thank you to our neighbours from Kensington Gardens for the soup and for thinking about our home today,” she said.

Ms Halton also expressed her gratitude to everyone who donated the ingredients for the soup.

“Without the community’s donations, the soup kitchen would not have been so successful,” she said
