Pedestrian accidents leave one child dead, one injured

One of the two was an eight-year-old boy who died after he was struck by a car on Thursday.

Two Kensington Primary School pupils were involved in accidents in less then a week.

One of the two was an eight-year-old boy who died after he was struck by a car at the intersection of Albertina Sisulu Road and 6th Street on Thursday.

Another boy, Mpho Mudau (10), is critical in hospital after he was struck by a car on Saturday, August 1.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Inspector Wayne Minnaar, said a driver was charged following Thursday’s incident.

“The car was driving along Albertina Sisulu Road and the child was crossing from school when this happened. The driver has been charged with culpable homicide. He will appear in court soon,” he said.

Paramedics certified the child dead at the scene.

He urged motorists to be extra careful when driving along this road.

“School children cross the road all the time, especially in the morning and in the afternoon when they go to or return from school. Be extra cautious when driving there,” said Insp Mennaar.

He also said that children should make sure it is safe before they cross this road.

“Cross where there are traffic lights. Make sure the lights are green before you cross. But most of all, be sure it is safe,” said Insp Minnaar.

The Jeppe Community Police Forum (JCPF) Sector 1 is raising funds to help Mpho, a Grade 3 pupil at the school.

JCPF Sector 1 deputy chairperson, Ms Angelene Burger, said Mpho and his friends jumped on a moving truck.

“When he reached Albertina Sisulu Road he jumped off. He was hit by a passing car,” she said.

At the time of going to print, Ms Burger said Mpho was still in a critical condition in hospital.

“He is still in a coma. Neurosurgeons will check the extent of the swelling and bleeding on the brain. They then will decide whether they will take him to the theatre. As of this morning (Thursday), there is still no major change,” she said.

She said Mpho lives with his father.

“His mother died. His father cannot afford all the necessities Mpho will need. We appeal to those who can to help. We urgently need things like baby wipes, towels, pyjamas, slippers and a gown. When he comes out of hospital he will need things like toys, crayons, books and toiletries that will help him to recuperate,” said Ms Burger.

Anyone who can help Mpho can email Ms Burger at Angelene.burger@tatinternational.com

At the time of going to print, the school was not available to speak to the EXPRESS.
