This year, Holy Rosary School celebrates the 75th year of the establishment of the school.
In 1999, the Holy Rosary Sisters celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary in 1924, by Bishop Joseph Shanahan.
In 2015, they celebrate Holy Rosary School by these Sisters, in June 1940.
The first Sisters arrived in Edenvale from Ireland in 1939 and they were given accommodation in the Hurly’s cottage in the middle of the veld. Mr Richard and Mr Henry Hurly donated land to the Sisters to establish a convent. In the beginning, an old bungalow was rented.
This was followed by a house built by the same brothers for the ‘Sister Refugees’, who came to spread God’s word.
This was to be the first school. When the school opened, there were only six pupils.
The new convent building, as it currently stands on Horwood Street, was built in 1958.
Since the beginning of Holy Rosary School, it has grown into a school that accommodates just under 1 000 pupils.
With the acquisition of more property, including the sporting fields at Shanahan Park, the school has grown into a place of learning for girls from Grade 0 to Grade 12.
Holy Rosary encourages excellence in academics, sports and culture, and the entire structure is underpinned by a strong Catholic faith and principles. Students are nurtured to perform to the best of their own abilities.
Thus, social responsibility forms an integral part of Holy Rosary School’s ethos.
The school strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, so that the girls will cultivate a social conscience and develop into young women of courage, compassion, humility and responsibility.
This is also achieved through various charity drives throughout the year and their very own Saturday School – The Phumelela Outreach Programme.
