Sacred Heart pupils, Michael Lazarus, Mujahied Moses and Lullen Hettema, are committing themselves to teaching people about the past, present and the future.
The Hearts into the Future Ride is to encourage people of all ages to cycle a route around central Johannesburg, connecting them with the past, specifically the heritage of tolerance and respect for all people.
“The ride is aimed at reflecting on the past and our hopes for the future, as well as raising awareness about xenophobia and the need for people to combat the ever growing racial divide and unwillingness to help those in need. We all want to make a different, we just don’t know how. With this ride, we hope we can help people learn humanity and empower them to change,” said grade 11 pupil, Mujahied Moses, who is one of the pupils encouraging others to ride.
“We also want to raise money for the three2six programme. I’m proud of my school for helping the refugee children to get education and I want to do my part to help,” said grade 10 pupil, Lullen Hettema.
The ride will take place on September 24, Heritage Day, and will start at 7.30am.
The route will pass significant sites as part of celebrating Heritage Day.
The ride will start at Sacred Heart College, travel through Observatory down Kallenbach Drive, towards the Satyagraha House in Norwood.
Riders will then make their way to the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, before heading back up Munro Drive, past King Edwards XVII, and back to Sacred Heart College.
Participates are encouraged to dress up in their traditional regalia.
The money raised from the cycle run will be donated to the three2six project for refugees, managed by Sacred Heart College, and also the Bicycle Empowerment Network.
