Four arrested after car chase and shootout

Two of the occupants abandoned the car and tried to flee on foot.

Four men were arrested following a car chase that started in Orange Grove and ended in a shootout that took place on Copper Street in Cyrildene.

The Cleveland SAPS communications officer, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said on Monday, September 28 after 7pm, police officers were patrolling in Orange Grove when they notice a VW Jetta with five occupants.

“They signalled to the driver to stop but the car sped off. The officers gave chase. The driver of the VW Jetta lost control and hit a boundary wall on Copper Street in Cyrildene. The vehicle was damaged,” said Const Mashakane.

Two of the occupants abandoned the car and tried to flee on foot.

“Police officers fired warning shots, but the men fled on foot. One man was later arrested in the surrounding area,” she said.

A firearm, with its serial number filed off, was found in the suspects’ vehicle, along with 12 live rounds of ammunition.

According to Const Mashakane, a second firearm was also found in the vehicle.
