Local paddlers tame the mighty Fish
The race was characterised by water releases, huge rapids and weirs, as well as the Eastern Cape hospitality and atmosphere.
Local residents and first time paddlers participated in the Fish River Marathon recently.
The Victoria Canoe Club managed to prepare 16 novice paddlers, which included Bedfordview and Edenvale residents.
Many of the paddlers were first time participants in this race.
The 82km race started at the Grass Ridge Dam and finished in Cradock, in the Easter Cape.
The race was characterised by water releases, huge rapids and weirs, as well as the Eastern Cape hospitality and atmosphere.
The race took place over a period of two days on the Fish River and only one of the 16 novices did not finish the race.
Considering that the water was high, Edenvale residents Mr Martin Thirwell and Mr Marius Croucamp finished in 254th place out of over 1 000 paddlers.
Other Bedfordview residents who finished their first Fish River race were Mr Claudio Gaspari, Mr Grant Panther, Ms Brook Stevens and Mr Robert Hamer.
“Overall, it was a great adventure, and most paddlers are now keen to complete the Dusi 2016. If you are keen to try this adventurous sport, the Victoria Lake Club offers a great introduction into canoeing,” said the chairman of the Victoria Canoe Club, Mr Wayne Saunders.
