Three people injured during shack fire

The Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Three people were treated on-scene after a shack fire at the Denver Informal Settlement yesterday afternoon.

About 527 residents were forced to sleep in the community hall and at the local day care centre after their shacks were destroyed in the fire.

252 shacks burnt to the ground.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson, Mr Robert Mulaudzi, said the fire started after 4pm.

“ One person was treated for smoke inhalation while another two were treated for burns,” he said.

Mr Mulaudzi said his department was concerned about the recent spate of fires in the city.

He said there have been more then five such incidents around the City of Johannesburg.

“We call on residents to be careful when using candles and stoves. They have been the cause of many fires,” he said.

Mr Mulaudzi urged those who are willing to help, to contact the Johannesburg Disaster Management Centre on 011 286-6009.
